You're probably right that it wouldn't have blown up as much as it did if it wasn't for some of the people involved making such a fuss about it, but as someone who does a lot of lurking, I can tell you that the anti-SBI stuff has been simmering in certain corners of the internet for a while, hence why that Steam curator was created in the first place; the reaction to it, at most, just caused the spark that made everything boil over.

The problem is that grifters are given free ammo to launder their bullcrap with. Instead of having to sell their bigotry with slightly more tame bigotry, they can hook a target in with somewhat accurate stuff like the person in this thread
