officially as per like 2005 wikipedia entry conventions, metroidvanias are explicitly 2d platformers to differentiate it from zelda and 3d stuff (and castleroids/castloids are explicitly the term for igarashi's games circa sotn though i guess that term died a fiery death the moment igavania got coined instead)I agree that they're fundamentally platformers but it's always seemed weird to me when people try to make it exclusively 2D, when nothing about the genre conventions requires that.
