My main problem with him is that it's not made completely clear whether he was planning to betray Gestahl. He does talk to himself in the lab about wanting to become a god, but in the Floating Continent scene, I kinda got the vibe that it was a spur of the moment thing where he freaked out at seeing his own blood which caused him to get really mad and absorb the Warring Triad.

My interpretation might be wrong I'll admit, but I think it's a bit ambiguous about whether he was loyal to Gestahl.

On the bright side, I think it's cool that he starts as just an evil clown who after some introspection develops his nihilistic philosophy. It does serve the game's themes well.

It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene, but there's a quick bit with Gestahl and Kefka entering the Sealed Gate just before the Floating Continent rises, where Gestahl orders Kefka to hurry up and Kefka is visibly irate at it. Not the most amazing foreshadowing in the world, but it does illustrate that Kefka doesn't take kindly to being ordered around at that point.
