I like that for most of the game he's down in the dirt with everyone else, whereas most FF villains suffer from a terminal case of having the stick of predestined grandeur shoved so far up their ass that they couldn't even look down their noses to see our scrappy heroes so far below them. Kefka starts off as a general, sure, but he's basically a glorified errand boy in his first non-flashback appearance. He's an active presence in the WoB, he leads his own troops into battle, and he gets his ass kicked on more than one occasion.

I know it's easy to just write him off as a loon with no motivation, but he's clearly highly ambitious, driven to conquer, and taking over the Warring Triad isn't something he just does on a whim at the last minute. He's also jealous / resentful of General Leo, and it's subtly foreshadowed at least once that he's not too fond of taking orders from Emperor Gestahl.

I'm not saying he's masterfully written by any stretch. But I feel like the current 'Kefka sucks and has no motivation' trend is a bit of an overcorrection against guys my age who used to proclaim him as teh best vidya gaem villen evar.
