I think the monkeys are kind of over-hated, honestly. Of all the pointless and boring and uninspired designs in the series, I don't really understand why those specifically have drawn so much vitriol.

I don't think they're good by any means but like a -81 in a division that isn't overly strong seems excessive.

well for one theres six of them instead of 1-3 and they all have identical stats and basically nothing going for them from a battle perspective either

I think they would be viewed less as complete wastes of space if they only took up 3 spots and didnt evolve, or if they all evolved from a common baby (like a tyrogue situation)

now that were in an era of only portions of the dex making it into each game, those 6 monkeys could be cutting your two favorite 3 stage lines! Or your three favorite 2 stage lines!

plus there are already a lot of great monkey Pokmon that everyone likes that they have to compete with
