You can only beat who you play. Probably because Izzo. As long as Sparty has a winning record, they will always find some way to let MSU in so long as Izzo is coach, because along with Cal and Bill Self, he's one of the few remaining coaches that people all over the country can identify (since Coach K, Roy Williams, Boeheim, and Beilein are all no longer coaching).
