An act that results in lasting physical or mental trauma.
That's just wrong.

It's just factually incorrect and also silly. Your own absurd example of "Someone bumping into you in the subway" could cause physical or mental trauma.
A brutal beatdown by 9 people could result no lasting physical or mental trauma. Yoselle Greenstein was once assaulted by a gang of Anti-semites. He won the fight and beat them all up.

By your logic he assaulted them because they all got injured and he didn't.

Nietzsche had a mental breakdown watching someone whip a horse and never recovered

Stick the correct definition literally everyone else in the world uses:

An assault is the illegal act of causing physical harm or unwanted physical contact to another person, or, in some legal definitions, the threat or attempt to do so.

make a physical attack on.
"he pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer"

noun
noun: assault; plural noun: assaults

a physical attack.

"his imprisonment for an assault on the film director"

The one you made up on the spot to downplay this assault is terrible

I am defending nobody. I simply disagree with the taxonomy you are attempting to push.

It's not "me attempting to push" it's universial. It's what the word means. it's common parlence, it's dictionary defined.

The people in the building watching it happen LITERALLY texted "Will Smith just assaulted Chris Rock" when it happened.

Other people who have done the same thing got arrested and are serving jail time for assault....

What part of "He did a bad thing and deserved to be punished for it" do you not understand?

...wut

I did answer that

You just quoted me answering it O_o

"In your case, the part where you furiously argue against the English language itself solely you can pretend it wasn't assault just so you can downplay it and then brag that you laugh at assault victims.

I guess in other words the part where you downplay his actions and insult assault victims by pretending "a bad thing" wasn't assault for reasons you literally cannot explain.

I mean you do realize this isn't a debate? You're just objectively wrong... As much as we can understand any objective reality on this earth....

IF you ran up and slapped Chris Rock while he was on stage, you would be arrested for assault

I can just imagine your defense lawyer burying his head in hands and going "Take whatever plea they give you and do not say a word to anyone" as you tell him your plans to lecture the jury that it's not assault to walk up to someone and slap them the face while cursing and threatening them. Then laugh at the prosecution for not understanding what assault means and the victim deserves mockery and laughter.
