There were a few other token candidates on the ballot to give the thinnest impression of an actual democratic election, but nobody who represented any real challenge to Putin's rule.

Alexei Navalny, who had significant popular support as an opposition leader against Putin, had been imprisoned since 2021 and died in prison last month.

In Russian occupied parts of Ukraine people were literally being forced at gunpoint to vote for Putin.
