First person to attack isn't necessarily the aggressor. If you're making a credible enough threat, being to first to actually attack can still be considered self-defense.

That being said, on reread, there's really not much detail to his "being the aggressor." It literally just says that he was, indeed, the aggressor.

His back was turned though so he was walking away, then gets stabbed twice. That could effect the self defense on the stabbing part.
