I still don't know why the term AAPI became popular, as if the struggles of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans are identical. Not trying to dismiss discrimination against PI Americans, but being an ethnic Chinese living in Australia, there, I feel that Asian American struggles are significant enough to stand on its own and does not need piggybacking off someone else's.
iirc, the government (at least, the US government) used to group people of Asian descent and people of Pacific Islander descent together for demographic purposes
