It happens here too, where the tax system is not designed to be as complex as humanly possible, and I've seen it from people who are otherwise quite smart. It's all about explaining it right - I find it helps to focus in particular on "the first $X still gets taxed at the low rate" (specifically using the word "first" in particular). --- Do, or do not.
