Musk is also pro-Putin and cultivates anti-US messaging on his platform. Yet the US is apparently okay with that. Though the GOP is also largely pro-Putin so it is unlikely a bill targeting Twitter could pass. Both parties have found it easy to drum up anti-China rhetoric.

Exactly. Not to mention all the dedicated far right sites too. I think the people here thinking it's a social media problem are completely lacking in perspective. This a natural occurrence of the internet becoming mainstream. Back before social media really took off there were tons of news of places like that lifting site, reddit and 4chan having extreme criminals and toxic trends come from them. There were even some murderers and people that pushed people to suicide from here. If social media was taken down all those people will just migrate to these older styled forums, cause here to become the new mainstream and cause a bunch of news to happen from here as well and then get the politicians to call for crackdowns here.
