Giving testimony and/or depositions is an incredibly stressful event and I don't recommend it to anyone.

yeah, it's possible he felt guilty about all the deaths even though they weren't really his fault, and took his own life. but obviously someone still needs to investigate.

Valery Legasov hung himself 2 years after Chernobyl, even though he wasn't really responsible for any of the deaths, the Soviet government was. but he recorded his testimony before he killed himself, so it's kind of the same situation with the whistle blowing

this is of course completely reliant on them proving he actually killed himself.
