It Happened One Night
The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Shakespeare in Love
Parasite

The first two are hard locked. It Happened One Night was the first movie to win the big five of Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay, which has only been repeated twice more since it did it in 1934. It is a great Golden Age of Hollywood representative that still holds up today. Return of the King not only has the joint record for most wins but also won everything it was nominated for (even Screenplay and Song which it wasnt supposed to), the largest clean sweep in oscar history. It is the most impressive oscar haul in history and so deserves to be on here.

Shakespeare in Love is a bit more abstract but I think it deserves it. This is the film that ushered in the age of the oscar bait and modern style of campaigning rather than just having the best film that ran for two decades. Unfortunately this was all down to one Harvey Weinstein and its no surprise that it didnt end until they got him. Its not a good thing, but its win over Saving Private Ryan is do influential it has to be on here.

Parasite is the first non-English language winner, and started the current trend of the academy broadly getting it right after the oscar bait era with the broader, younger, more international membership backing a wider array of very high quality films.

You know what shouldnt be on here? The Godfather. Its awards performance was actually kind of underwhelming despite it winning Picture. It only won Picture, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay, because it was getting upset left and right by Cabaret which won eight awards, including Fosse upsetting Coppola for Director. As a result the feeling is that The Godfather won Picture by the skin of its teeth, they even opened the acceptance speech with we were getting worried there for a minute. Cabaret won the most awards of any film to not win Picture, and arguably has the more impressive feat. So The Godfather isnt really an archetypal winner, in reality it barely won.
