lotta people still can't get it through their head that the series is a sequel to the ps1 game lmao

"Sequel" is an excuse at best - a cope. You can still judge sequels and prequels alike for being unfaithful to their respective source materials. On the flipside, Square saw the reception of Chrono Cross and said after the fact it wasn't a sequel to Trigger, as if that somehow made better the things Cross did wrong.

The games could have been a perfect 1:1 remake and fuckloads of people would still cry about it because Square decided to touch the Holy Cow that is FF7. I'm glad we're something new.

This, too, is an excuse. Some people just like being angry, and it's true you cannot please everyone even without those anger addicts. I'm confident the upgraded graphics and music, and the combat, would have been enough to make most og VII fans happy. Add a few details to the story to flesh out necessary parts or the connections between VII and its myriad of prequels and sequels? Sure, the og VII was not a perfect game. Remake and Rebirth underhanded and undermined as much as, if not more than, they improved.

Again, I liked Rebirth's story until the aforementioned parts. The addition of the card game was nice. Shinra storming Kalm to deal with your party made some sense, though what we see in Rebirth is a bit extreme in terms of the scale of said assault. Especially after the turmoil seen at the end of Midgar, where it also would have made sense for Shinra to regroup, lick their wounds, and deal with your party when the opportunity next arose. Having the extra scene of Reeve tampering with the wanted poster? Definitely welcome.

I mean, it is helly. The fact that he thinks it's great is probably a pretty clear indication that it's terrible.

As true as this could be, it's also a logical fallacy to simply judge a thing based on who the other party is. Tallying a case as being typical behavior once it has been examined, however...

I have no doubt the original Weapons will make a return in the finale.

I have no doubt the third part will say and do a lot of things in the first act or two to try and get on everyone's good graces and make critics forget what they were angry about, until the final act of the story comes along and tampers with elements it shouldn't have. And this may include a handwave to why Diamond, Emerald, Sapphire, and Ruby now look like their NA-localized og VII counterparts instead of like whales. That said, looking at what is left of the VII story as a source material, and what has been re-relegated or swept under the rug, I'm not sure how they'll pull it off unless the third part is either a 250 hour game or they pull a Xenogears and summarize a huge chunk of events with a powerpoint presentation.
