I'm not that far into the game, so maybe this changes, but what's strangest to me about the world is that it's really not all that different from 16's world in terms of having big zones in which there are a lot of different activities to do. It's like... if you took one of the regions in 16 and just dropped icons all over the map for all of the hunts and rare materials and lore bits, maybe added a tower or two to unlock those icons, they would look practically identical, but whereas 16 got savaged by fans for not having "world traversal", rebirth seems to largely be avoiding this criticism.

I haven't got too far into VII Rebirth yet but the problem with XVI is that there weren't many different activities to do in the world at all and there was no reason to explore.

I don't think you do anything in a single XVI quest other than follow the waypoint (or hunting board hint) to collect an item or fight monsters .

Like towers are an obvious incentive to explore off the beaten track even if it's boring and unimaginative. XVI didn't even have that.
