Not excusing indoctrinated voters supporting these things, but amygdala hijacks are a thing and I wish more people understood how these work since it explains why seemingly 'normal' people (determined via casual interaction) go batshit crazy when politics get brought up and deflect like crazy. There's been a strong and consistent effort to help drive the enlargement of the amygdala in the brains of the conservative voterbase, generally via alarmist reporting and higher percentages of crime coverage.
