Honestly the military can be a good path out of poverty for some people. Me and my best friend grew up on a dirt poor reservation in Minnesota. I went to college and eventually got a PhD and now work as a research professor in Japan. He joined the Navy and became a nuclear technician on submarine and is now working for a Japanese company that makes essential parts for semiconductor manufacturing. He never even got an undergrad degree, but he makes four times more than I do. I am not advising anyone to join the military (and he wouldn't either, he hates the US government and the military), but it is a path out of poverty for some people.

Damn nice for you two
