Russia is trying to steal Ukraine because most of Russia is frozen wasteland where you can't grow food, and Ukraine has some of the most fertile soil in Europe. China is agitating against Taiwan because they're embarrassed a tiny little island claims the right to rule them and is also vastly wealthier per capita because it embraced a western style economy rather than building riches for the Emperor on the backs of half a billion shit covered peasants.
