Care to extend that reasoning to JPEG (P stands for Photographic which has an F sound), or will you be hypocritical?
If it was JPhEG you would have a point. Name a word that without the "h" following it a "p" sounds like an "f".

And before you call me a hypocrite, I don't say gif(t) because the "g" stands for "graphical" but because that's how I heard others pronounce it. And to me it makes perfect sense.

For AWOL. I say "a-wall" because that's how I've always heard even though it doesn't really make sense.

Or WYSIWYG. I didn't even know anyone tried to pronounce that until a friend said, "whizzy-wig" and I was just dumbfounded. Okay, whizzy-wig it is.

How we pronounce words isn't determined by "inventors" or what is proper or even logical, but how our community has decided to. That's why even in the US or UK or Indonesia or China or where ever, you have dozens or hundreds of different accents and/or dialects.

If the majority of the internet community says gif with a hard g, that's how it's pronounced, like it or not.
