Kissing might be weird, and if you're engaging in oral sex you may unknowingly be applying pressure in a bad way. If your dentist is scraping off a bunch of plaque from your teeth, that might also cause your gums to bleed and an open sore in your mouth makes oral sex more likely to transmit an STI.
