I saw them pretty much every night of my childhood and they weren't bugs or floaters. It also wasn't sleep paralysis because I often had to get up at night, and I'd watch these things go running like the Flash got up (in those early years, I was TERRIFIED to) to go to the bathroom. I will say I did experience sleep paralysis on one occasion and when I did, the "demon" that I saw was more human-like than the shadow figures, to the point I thought someone who broke into the house. That said, I do believe they're hallucinations related to sleep paralysis. But they were fucking terrifying, and with the help of AI I can show a close approximation of what I saw. I did see the infamous "hat man" and what I think of as a female version of that, which was a spindly witch form. The AI liked to give them eyes, but 98% of the time, there were no eyes. The rooms are also a lot brighter than they were when I saw them in person.
