Any alien civilisation capable of interstellar travel will have a great understanding of science. SI wasn't just made up. Things like the speed of light, the Planck constant, the elementary charge, the Boltzmann constant and the Avogadro constant are fixed and constant everywhere in the universe. It will make sense to derive your units from those. Example, the second, symbol s, is the SI unit of time. It is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the caesium frequency, Cs, the unperturbed ground-state hyperfine transition frequency of the caesium 133 atom, to be 9192631770 when expressed in the unit Hz, which is equal to s1. ...
