So plant managers were also responsible for research and development? Holy shit corporations really got their money's worth in the 60s. I've worked in manufacturing and can't imagine any of those idiot managers being expected to do this.
I think it's more that plant managers were listened to by the R&D guys when they had an actual good idea instead of being written off as "that dumb fuck in manufacturing".
