And it was largely a reasonable thing prior to the brain rot, though a bit misguided. Originally the US had substantially lower issues with funding due to not having a standing army and instead having it be based on conscription from the various militias in every town/city (yes, the second amendment part that conservatives have a massive whine over existing had an actual point). While it had long since fallen to the wayside of what the US did by 1893 there were still quite a few people that clung to the idea that a military could be just drafted from militias and be comparable to one that was trained specifically as an army as a way to reduce taxes/expenditures. --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome?
