This is execs throwing a temper tantrum and hoping to get the public to agree with them.
It's like when Papa John's whined about Obamacare and claimed they had to mark up items by $2 but when this was investigated it would have been an average of a 15 cent increase per item to maintain their profit margin.

And people ate that up too.
