Uhhh.....What......the....fuck.....We give addictive pain meds to children now?
With the kind of sickle cell pain crises episodes I had as a kid, I would be way the hell worst off or possibly dead had I not got "addictive pain meds" alongside everything else that helps with either help preventing the pain crises from starting and controlling the pain when it inevitably happens. Usually the stronger stuff is reserved for when you actually go to the hospital compared to the at-home pain medicine. For me personally something like oxycodone and morphine sulfate is only taken when needed, but if I ever get into a pain crisis that my home medicines just isn't cutting it (normally happens when the weather gets cold as balls) then a trip to the ER and a IV set-up with something like dilaudid is normal for sickle-stuff. (Yeah, I was used to this kind of thing w/ a pain pump as a kid).

For some of us chronic pain patients, yeah, stronger meds really is a life-long thing. It doesn't necessarily mean you become addicted to them though (although it actually can happen, but majority of us life-long chronic pain peeps are responsible with this kind of thing).
