In 2003, Fall Out Boy put out a pop punk masterpiece of an album called Take This to Your Grave. It is literally perfection. The lyrics are intensely personal, angry, pessimistic, witty, and poetic. The riffs are slamming. The production is powerful. There is not a single skipable song on the record. The immediate follow-up to TTTYG, From Under the Cork Tree, is mostly decent, but the music regressed big time and the lyrics are appropriately half as good. Everything after that is throwaway pop or pop rock trash. It is insane how good that first album is compared to the, at best, mediocrity that followed.
