The DS/3DS NSMB games were quite meh, but I did find Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World to be a great iteration that melded 2D and 3D mario. I understand the complaints about online co-op, but I don't really care personally. The Wii/Wii U NSMB games were a shitshow of frustration and fun with 2-4 player couch co-op. You spend more time learning when to scream 'BUBBLE!!!' at each other. It's fun as hell in person for sure, but you can basically do it in ghost mode without everyone else messing up every 2nd move you make.
