What made Craig great was that the show was largely off the cuff, especially as the show went on and Josh Robert Thompson (Geoff Peterson) grew into a legit sidekick whom Craig could bounce off of. This paired with instances like the OP gave him a reputation of being far more genuine than most of his late-night contemporaries.
