At the age of 39, Alois applied to have his name changed to that of his stepfather (or actual father, the records are a bit fuzzy), Johann Hiedler. It is not known who decided to record the name as Hilter instead of Hiedler. But can you imagine what would have happen if Alois hadn't changed his name? Could you see people yelling "Heil Schicklgruber"?
