Two years ago I pre-ordered a Playdate. I just got it in the mail today. Today I embark on my epic quest to actually play the thing, and after waiting this long I am going to get my money's worth out of this thing.

But I'm sure you've got questions! Let me preempt that by answering everything I know you're thinking!

Oh yeah, I did say that. Fair enough. Well, the Playdate is this weird little handheld system that was first announced a couple of years ago. Literally. I placed my pre-order in September of 2021. Things got delayed multiple times due to microchip shortages, and they are literally fulfilling the final pre-orders for this thing right now. Think of it as a sort of spiffy looking Game Boy. You have a directional button, an A and B button, and a crank.

A crank? That sounds like a gimmick.
Probably is. But it looks cool! Some games use the crank in various ways. I'm guessing there will be a lot of fishing games on here.

What sort of games will you be playing?

Yes. Well, maybe. Until I get bored. I checked and there are 79 games released so far. Most of them look pretty short and I don't think there are any Persona 4 equivalents lurking on here. You actually get 24 of them for "free" as a part of the purchase of the system. It is released as a season, with two of them dropping every week (although you can apparently speed this up as it has been forever since the games first released now). I have no idea if there will be a second season, but there is a store now where you can buy other games ala carte.

I honestly have no idea. I sort of forgot about this until I got an email the other day saying it was coming. I charged it today, opened it up and saw I had two games waiting for me, then made this topic. Now you know as much as I do! I did look for information out there, but there really isn't any. I don't see reviews anywhere (other than whole system reviews) and considering this has sold a whopping 50k so far, I can't imagine there are a lot of sources for hot Playdate info.
