I remember struggling more on World 3 as a kid. Seems like there is a difficulty spike there. I think the way the mini-castles work does present a decent alternative to starting the world over every time. If you clear a mini-castle, its lock remains clear so you can jump ahead forward with pipes without needing to play all the levels again. World 3 has two mini-castles, so that's two chances to save progress.

Although, if you get all the way to the end and then die on the airship, that will cause the airship to go somewhere, so if that happens after a game over, you may need to replay some levels after all. Kind of a funny system, heh.
