As long as you can use cover to your advantage, I find 3rd person shooters to be slower and more methodical than FPS games. See the mob of enemies, get behind cover, plan out your targets, and pop them one at a time with the ones closing in on you getting priority. You can do run n' gun if you want too, if you don't mind taking a lot of risks. I'm at least hoping the enemy AI is better because it was laughably easy in the beta -- enemies would often just stand there like idiots while you shoot them and enemy fire didn't really do all that much damage. You could effortlessly walk through crowds and take your time picking each one off. It wasn't a very frequent situation where you were in any real danger.

From my time playing the beta, try to upgrade your weapon to as high of a rarity one as you can pull ASAP. Even a 4* weapon (purple) is pretty decent to tide you over than the basic one your character starts with. Don't forget your teammates' support skills and switch when you need to. Also, try to make your team as follows: one that specializes in AoE and crowd control for grouped enemies, one that specializes in single target damage, and the last one to support the team with what they lack (healing or whatever). Team synergy and balance is important.

The game will start you off with Lyfe, Fenny, and Acacia for free when the tutorial section is done. That's not a terrible team but I replaced Acacia because she was overlapping too much with Lyfe for my tastes. You'll get some other free characters in the first few chapters, so play around with team builds until you find one you like. Each character specializes in a gun type: Lyfe uses SMGs, Fenny is the shotgun girl, Yao is a sniper, Acacia uses handguns.

Upgrading character skills are nice but I found upgrading the weapon and character levels first helped more.
