Im pretty sure the words "somehow Palpatine returned" were the result of frustration of having the big wigs telling you how the story's gonna go. Most of them are pretty capable, but they write for the intended audience. Kinda like classically trained musicians working for pop artist cause it pays the bills. This is why fanfiction has so much potential. Zero barrier to entry (which works against it as well as for it) and no overhead meaning you can write what you want.
