My thought is that Mario is the worst character. Luigi and Peach can take shortcuts the others can't (or at least can't easily). If you're going to use Mario, why not just use Toad and get the extra run speed and pulling speed? I don't think Mario's jump advantage over Toad lets him get to a lot of places that Toad can't. For jumping-focused levels I'm using Luigi or Peach anyway.

I found Peach fairly useful for the ice sections in world 4. Luigi's probably the best overall, since you can skip over big sections with him. I'd normally just stick to Toad and Peach, though, with an occasional Luigi.
