It can absolutely be done to make oneself look less flattering. Look at all of those romance movies made for teen audiences where someone will wear beetle glasses and a striped sweater until the script calls for them to find their true self. Then, all of the sudden, they're beautiful.

This is the same thing, but in reverse. The new look was accompanied by a new personality. She went from dropping references to video games and cracking jokes to being stern and offended by everything.
