I think that's kind of the point. The book is being used by someone (probably a villain in the upcoming game) to keep history on a very specific track. There's no way it just randomly stuck to one of the two people in the world who are capable of stopping Deathpolca- and the other person would probably be less decisive in using it. It was EXACTLY right enough of the time that with inaction it would always be the same outcomes, and it showed how futile halfhearted measures would be.
It's TOO obvious though. Like who trusts a book of prophecy that changes with no outside interference? Blond girl wasn't shown to be especially stupid, if anything she is supposed to be clever. She was the one that informed us of all the times the prophecy changed so she clearly knew it. It just doesn't make any sense on a basic level. Even kalinka should be able to put together how worthless that book is. Then aside from that, what took things way off their initial awful course? Telling polca about it, so just do that again.

But really, the true shame of the ending is that we lose somehow in the repeatedly dumbest ways. Why am I running from her in the first place? Why don't I immediately use FUH pull? Why don't I use full heal after the battle? Why doesn't Lily revive quickly and at full health? The healing especially makes no sense. Earlier in the story we get impaled through the chest by lily and a quick heal completely cures the issue, so healing magic isn't just a gameplay convenience. They even go out of the way to tell us kalinka learned it and we see how powerful it is.

Well no, I lied, the real shame is that we fail to accomplish our goal. I'm being punished for winning a game. That shouldn't happen. Even if the writing was airtight and the logic behind it was impeccable, it would still be a terrible ending to a video game that I beat. We already have a whole mode dedicated to losing. I feel the same way about the other game I mentioned, Daughter of Essence, which is still personally my pick for best rpgmaker game but it also has a similarly unsatisfying ending, although it was at least written more solidly. Man I hope that dev makes a sequel and lets us actually beat the dream. I think theres a good chance if you liked demons roots you'd like daughter of essence. It's a bit of a slower start, but the characters and the world are very well written and interesting IMO. It doesn't have a soundtrack as good as shade's, but it does actually have really good copyright free music that gives each area it's own mysterious vibe. Especially the cove, witchdale and esterholt. It also has similar themes of an empire that seems impossible to confront, slavery, freedom, and war.
