Changing the locks on your landlord is just as bad and will get you in trouble. The two things you need to make sure before you do anything is to see if the landlord actually put a provision in his contract with you, and whether that's legal in your state/county/city (because chances are it's not). There's a chance that your landlord may have put it in your lease and might actually claim he can do it.
