There's dragons that fly around and drop upgrade materials (or materials you can use for weapon infusion), but you can only get 1 material before having to wait 15 minutes to get another one. Duping allowed you to skip that wait. Plus there's some armor sets you have to buy, and the prices for them are absurdly high. The workaround was duping diamonds that you could sell to be able to afford then. Without the dupe glitch the best way to get rupees is replaying mini games over and over again, which gets really boring after a bit.
