#8 - Catman

Would you look at his abs, though?

Thomas Blake was once an enemy of Batman, a villain who trended downward in the quality of his work and his results until he hit rock bottom, overweight, caught robbing a convenience store by Green Arrow. Blake decided to reconstruct himself, and he did so during No Mans Land, taking over a small sliver of the city to care for a pride of lions. Afterwards, Blake retreated to Lamumba, where he lived on a game preserve with his beloved brother Hector and the rest of his lion family. When he refused to join the Society, however, Deathstroke left a message - dozens of dead lions, and a family destroyed. Now, Blake seeks vengeance against Deathstroke and the rest of the Society as a member of the Secret Six. After their headquarters was captured by the traitorous Cheshire, Blake and the rest of the Six were forced to flee from their base outside of Stone Ridge, Vermont, to Zonn Zorr. He has vowed to pay back the future mother of his child for this indignity. Blake also was offered the mantle of Batman some time before A-Day, an offer he has emphatically declined.

Of course, the story past this point has become well-documented - the betrayal, the attempt at rectification. Catman now wrestles with the guilt he feels over the child, unborn in Cheshire's belly, that he wants no part of. And as he grapples over the morality of himself, that cowl, delivered by Batman just before the end, seems loom ever present.

As excited as we all are for new personalities, new storylines, new friends and new enemies, I was not done with Catman. Not by a longshot. In the last campaign, the notion was that Catman was the individual who thrived in a world without society and law. A city without a city. He was a beast in a jungle, the only person to improve with the destruction of Gotham City. In this campaign, I've taken that theme and renewed it. In a world without HEROES, Catman has the potential to become the world's greatest. And that's not because Darkseid has eliminated the heroes of Earth in a succinct, drumming defeat. This all falls on the notion that Zatanna may have committed an act so vile, so unexpectedly awful, that it turned anarchy into a Society. And it may be the catalyst to forge a hero out of Catman. We don't have a lot of opportunities for a long cowboy in this character, but I think Catman, more than anyone else, has the opportunity to develop that independent mind and change the world around him. The only issue is that he carries demons on his back, and the baggage of his past may not be so quickly relieved. The ghost of Hector - and I mean this seriously - weighs heavily on Catman, especially now that said ghost lives on a branch just outside of Catman's treehouse. Imagine losing your closest family member to violence. Catman was already quick to brutal revenge before. Will that weakness doom the Secret Six?

Oh thank heaven, we're down to seven.
