#13 - Her Highness

You would do well to address her as such.

The Betrassan princess Iolande is both one of two young Green Lanterns of Sector 1417 and also the royal ruler of a planet that until recently was lorded over by Sinestro in his reign of terror. Iolandes planet was left starving, having succumbed to global climate change created by being forced into specific industries by Sinestros totalitarian leadership. Iolande finds the burden of being both Lantern and ruler significant, but as is her nature, she hides this weight behind the trappings of her station. Considered one of more isolated Lanterns in the Corps, Iolande will even go so far as to take her meals in a cordoned off portion of the Lantern dining hall so as to avoid intermingling with her fellow Corpsmen. However, Iolande has begun recently to share just a bit of her story with Saoirse, who has taken up a curious interest in the oft-recluse princess. This interest led Iolande and Saoirse to her homeworld, where the party took up arms against her long-lost brother.

Fortunately, her new friends were able to stay the execution of Prince Ragnar, and Iolande assumed not only the role of Princess of Betrassus, but Queen of Korugar as well. Now, opening up just a little, Iolande has begun dialogues with Jemm at Roz'etta's urging, knighted Brennus (mainly to teach him a lesson)... and who knows what else she will do. The future is bright for the regal Lantern.

It would be difficult for me to speak to what makes Iolande so perfect, in my estimation. Despite her outwardly arrogant demeanor and cold adherence to strict social mores, Iolande is a servant to her people, both of her kingdom and her sector. Little has been heaped upon Iolande that hasn't hardened her into a being focused solely on duty. Her obligations leave Iolande entirely unwilling to bend even a little - those things which are frivolous are seen as poison to her. Only recently has she become even slightly willing to open up and share in the simple experiences of food for enjoyment, as an example.

It would be difficult to not talk about how Saoirse has transformed around Iolande, and vice versa. At first, Saoirse was tongue-in-cheek with the princess, perhaps enjoying subverting expectations quietly as much as genuinely entertaining the Princess' oddities. Yet, over time, the pair have bonded in such a deep, meaningful way. They're coming to trust one another, to have each other's backs. After Korugar's completion, I am greatly looking forward to seeing where this close friendship takes each of them. It's a rarity, I think, to have such a realistic, developing relationship in a campaign between a PC and an NPC. Yet, our players really have impressed me at every turn with how much their deep, evolving connections change over time. Iolande in particular is one that intrigues me deeply. These two women are the opposite of one another in many ways, yet together, they seem to improve one another, change one another for the better. And I simply cannot wait to see what happens next.

A dirty dozen to go.
