I think that playing 3 closer to crossbell is probably the better way to do it though This. I rather like the delayed approach with 3rd. Non-spoilery, but there's a kind of Kingdom Hearts-ish feel to unlocking your party and going through chapters, like if you're a Disney fan you know the places and people when you see them, but they both come in kind of randomly/unexpectedly, and the worlds are filled with strange monsters, and it can be a strange trip. Plus, lots of extras you can unlock the doors of.
