Yeah, it actually wasn't as bad as I thought once I tried a couple of more times; it's fairly easy to bait and parry/dodge if you keep the right amount of distance. I only lost one heart to gloom , and that was due to me getting sloppy/slipping up yet again. I got a really strong sword (over double the amount of power of anything I've found so far) out of it, but it says something about wearing the user down over time, so I assume it applies gloom to you if you use it. Oh well. At least it was good practice.

Yeah, the way it works is that every few attacks give you a point of gloom - if you're not fighting a gloom enemy and not underground, then it WILL ungloom during the fight.
