Honorable Mention: Mordru

The man who would be #108. And once again, I'm cheating from the last list! We're almost out of these cribbed write-ups...

Mordru is a Lord of Chaos. Hell, maybe even THE Lord of Chaos. Magic bends to his will, reality submits to his whim. Mordru has killed Doctor Fates before. Plural. He's nearly destroyed the entire Justice Society twice. He's plunged the planet into darkness, and it was only through the combined efforts of sixty-odd heroes and the magic of Arion (the real one) that Mordru was stopped. He was imprisoned in a Zodiac Crystal, left to languish until the end of his days.

Then, the Eighth Age of Magic happened, and all of that went out the window. A team of Checkmate agents found his crystal prison underneath the lair of Area 51. After taunting them, whispering to them and threatening them, Mordru released himself and vowed to hunt down the Checkmate team and destroy them - but first, he has unfinished business to attend to.

It's no secret Mordru is one of my all-time favorite DC villains. This guy is everywhere and every time in DC history. You can, at best, delay his inevitability, stall him while you search desperately for another way to stall him so you can hunt another way... it's an endless spiral of desperation in the pursuit of survival. But Mordru's power comes not just from his magic, but his lack of restraint. He will go for your throat - he has no compunctions, no scruples, no sense of decorum. He just thirsts for power, perhaps more than any other being. And Mordru has enough of it already that he could conceivably make plays that put the party's plans in complete jeopardy. He's a big enough player that it's the Spectre, Eclipso and Mordru who are mentioned as the greatest threats to the magical community. Hell, Mordru might even worm his way into the position of the Spectre's host. Can you imagine that? Just one misstep and the Wrath of God becomes the trappings of a madman. Then we're all screwed.

What I love most about Mordru is that he tops himself, over and over. The sneering smile hides great, perhaps unfathomable, wisdom. And he uses it not to help but to crush you beneath the ponderous might of his intimidating grin. Mordru met the party on the Story Line, and he KNEW they were moving through time via the Story Line. He has that kind of sixth sense, that kind of innate magical understanding. He laughed it off. He laughed off the ability to alter reality via storytelling as BENEATH HIM.

God, I love Mordru. I'm generally torn on who I want to see win between the party and the Dread Lord of the Sorcerer's World. Leaning Mordru, I think? We'll let the party put up their argument first, I suppose.

Another day, another Honorable Mention. Maybe I should have just done two hundred entries. Another hundred honorable mentions, maybe.
