#27 - Vicki Vale

It's Hate on Varra Day! Brennus loves this.

Vicki Vale is a renowned photojournalist from Gotham City who was for years romantically linked with Bruce Wayne. After the disappearance of Batman and the subsequent events of A-Day, Vale chose to put her own survival at the forefront - after all, she couldnt let the secret of Batmans identity fall into the wrong hands. Disguising herself as an Equated, Vale served as a double agent, a teacher at the Bristol Township reeducation center, before escaping during a breakout spearheaded by Batgirl, and no one else at all. Vale has since arrived at Zonn Zorr, where she has taken it upon herself to once again serve as the badgering, irksome journalist who takes down any threat to her safety, such as Lush. Vale is considered by many to be very polite.

Vicki Vale is more important to the campaign than almost any other character on this list simply because she plays the role of the singular medium to the outside world. Vicki's articles are an opportunity to tell the tales that can't be told elsewhere. RP time is always focused on the personal, and sessions are focused on actions and accomplishments. Rumination is the stuff that lays behind it all, contemplation eschewed in the favor of pressing forward. Vicki, to that end, provides me a singular opportunity to explore the sorts of things otherwise taken for granted - infrastructure crumbling around the world, lives lost, the smaller, forgotten tales of adventure that percolate while the party churns larger pots. The Gazette is one of my favorite outlets for downtime campaign creativity - it allows me so much latitude to explore the goings-on around the planet, but always from the perspective of Gotham's most precocious reporter. And sometimes, it reveals more about Vicki than the world at large, which can be quite enjoyable.

But Vicki is also someone who holds a position to the bitter end. In the first campaign, she was a nuisance; in this campaign, she is a rabble-rouser, a revolutionary, a voice for the billions whose voices have been lost. And, more importantly, her entire worldview has changed, simply due to the knowledge that Batman is Batman. In a similar manner, Vicki's position on Varra del Luca has been a constant from the very get-go, and now, as Brennus develops an affinity for Vicki, he seems to see the foibles and iniquities of his mother's lifestyle as an assassin for what they are - a reason he's dealt with certain troubles his whole life. As Varra's greatest enemy quickly becomes a confidante to Brennus, the complexity of their relationship has grown fascinating. Brennus may have started to trust Vicki, but not implicitly - he did reveal that Vicki wanted to bug ZZ headquarters to the Queen herself. Certainly he doesn't trust her in the same way Parch does!

As the campaign continues, I hope that Vicki continues to play a crucial, opinionated and outspoken role central to the growth of Z'onn Z'orr.

#26 - last to fall out of the top quarter! And a top-half pick.
