#29 - John Godda' Constantine

Merry bloody Christmas.

John Constantine is a mercenary occult investigator with a checkered history. From his association (and conception) with Swamp Thing and his wife to his love affair with Zatanna, from his haircut with Saoirse to his Christmas quest with Spirit, Constantine has had his fingers almost everywhere in the superhero community. Constantine walks a line between light and darkness, practicing magicks equally as ill as good. Perhaps that makes him the most qualified man to confront the Spectre on his current rampage against the arcane. Too bad that John is happy to sit this war out, enjoying his drinks and trying not to grow a conscience.

Perhaps the most tortured soul in the campaign, we meet John at a time when he's starting to reach his mid-life crisis. John's alienated everyone he's ever loved. Actually, no. That's not true. John's alienated everyone who survived loving him, because John's a bastard who actually cares more than he will ever be willing to admit. His life features a smorgasbord of bad decisions, ranging from mischievous bouts of trickery in the name of self-interest to outright malicious, evil acts that weigh so heavily on his heart that he simply refuses to even give them consideration, so sure is he that to do so would to rip him open. The sad truth is that John perhaps has the most to teach any of our PCs, and yet he fears what that tutelage will do to anyone else. There's probably a piece of him that wants to do, but he's just too much a coward to let that ever happen. John likely is a better executioner of punishment for himself, a warden for his own self-imposed hell, than any devil ever could be.

That said, Constantine's evolving role - a quiet one - is about protecting children these days. Spirit is a sad child without any family at the moment, and I think the nicest thing Constantine could do is provide a little yuletide distraction that also suits his own bizarre, shadowy agenda. Then there's his own kind-of sort-of daughter Tefe Holland, who he keeps on a rotisserie in his own quarters, spending day and night caring for her, bathing her, providing protective spells to her so that the Equation or the Gray are unable to gain a foothold inside of her mind. Constantine even has a rather unique relationship with Saoirse, something of a mentorship. It's clear from the get-go that the pair detest saying anything kind to one another, but Constantine's guilt over Saoirse's poor induction into the realm of the magi seems to have left him with a faint responsibility for her well-being, as much as he'd be loathe to admit it. All of this wraps up into a nice, tidy little package, and although Constantine has faded into the background over time, he remains the early campaign's most flavorful character nonetheless.

#28 comes from the top half of our draft board!
