#30 - Cheshire

Hello, Spirit.

Lined up behind Cheshire is a long trail of bodies, those that she has betrayed and left littered on the streets, corpses that remind anyone with enough sense to never trust Cheshire. An assassin with an expertise in talon-kata, or nail-fighting, Cheshire has proven only trustworthy as far as your dollar can take you. In No Mans Land, Cheshire was employed by the Lynx, a woman who Cheshire believed was a surefire bet to dominate the city. In the world of Darkseid, Cheshires allegiance switched from Mockingbird to Lex Luthor, who she believed could return her child to her, protecting Lian from onslaught brewing outside of Titans Tower. Cheshire turned on Checkmate and the Secret Six and has since been moving across America, making deals and accruing followers within the Society, every action aimed at returning her own daughter to her.

No one ever trusted Cheshire. Not really. So perhaps it came as no surprise when she rolled out of bed and decided to turn on her acquaintances in the Secret Six. I have to admit that I respected the hell out of that decision from her; it was the smart choice. Mockingbird had given her just enough information to make him or herself irrelevant in Cheshire's eyes. Just enough. And Cheshire has never exactly been known to hold great stock in loyalty. Her brand of trust only extends a millimeter past what she gets out of any relationship. She's a taker. But she'll seduce you into believing that this time, you may have won her over. She always presents herself as endlessly fascinated with you - and only you. That's how she gets you. She'll cut like a knife and smile all the while.

Amoral, unbending, and intricately crafted, Cheshire was already an illusion, even more than the one that she placed in Haven to befuddle the party. She has a certain childlike playfulness in her games, just like the outro to Haven suggests, but she's "earned her degree" - Cheshire is well-versed in villainous mind games, and turning Catman into a seething headcase is just par for the course. She's after one thing - one thing that holds her heart. And the most she will do is "throw shadows at you", lies and deceptions meant to confuse and turn things around and around while she makes her escape.

Yet, somehow, despite her betrayals, her machinations - all of it! - the party still, for some reason, is willing to play ball with the woman who screwed Catman, stole his seed to make a child all in an effort to have an insurance policy for her impending bad acts, and made off like a bandit while forcing the party to fight for its lives more than once. What a gal.

#29 drops another first rounder!
