Deaf people would say the same thing (because of deaf culture being a strong thing that developed from discrimination, etc.) but most people would agree with the idea that being able to hear is strictly better than not being able to hear. As COVxy alluded, how much of a difference is there between autism and schizophrenic people who have hallucinations that are sometimes dangerous but sometimes inspire them to make great paintings, music, etc. in terms of the argument of "the good and the bad" making it part of your personality?
I think there is a lot of difference. For a lot of the spectrum, literally just recognizing people's differences and playing to their strengths can let them lead the same life as anyone else. "Normal" people have strengths and weaknesses. Would we say there is something wrong with them if they fail outside of their comfort zones? You can't cater to the strengths of schizophrenia. You can't turn depression into a positive. I simply don't accept from experience that I'm only broken, or that catering to my "delusions" will hurt me in the end. I know it's not true for the entire spectrum, but I can only have my good days. That wouldn't be true for an unmedicated schizophrenic or bipolar person.
