Topic | Student devours $120,000 banana that was taped to a wall. |
argonautweakend 05/03/23 4:47:43 PM #62: | I think almost anything is art that has a concept behind it. To a lesser extent, also how it is framed and presented. There is good art and bad art. That's kind what I am getting at. Art isn't a mark of quality. A banana on the wall might be bad art but I don't see what doesn't make it art. It is a concept planned with a purpose. I haven't seen the piece in person, but I probably wouldn't gain anything myself from seeing it. I'd say it's bad art. I am reminded of the piece 4'33" by composer John Cage. The piece instructs the players to sit still for 4'33". Nobody moves, nobody makes a sound. The composer stands still. People have debated this up and down but it is similar. I (think) the idea behind it from John Cage's perspective is that the music is coming from the ambient sounds that happen during the performance. Or maybe a larger part about how even in a composition that insists on silence, sound is everywhere. I am not an expert on any of this. My firm belief is that a lot of things qualify as art, but not all of it is good. ... Copied to Clipboard! |
